Varun Gandhi SMALL BONE INNOVATIONS, INC. TO SPONSOR ANKLE DISTRACTION WORKSHOP AT ANNUAL WESTERN PODIATRIC MEDICAL CONGRESS
NEW YORK, NY: June 24, 2009 - Small Bone Innovations, Inc. (SBi), a leading provider of innovation, products, technology and education for the small bone & joint segment, is sponsoring an ankle distraction technology educational workshop on June 26th at the annual Western Podiatric Medical Congress in Anaheim, CA. The workshop will be conducted by Austin T. Fragomen, MD*, a surgeon at the Institute for Limb Lengthening & Deformity Services at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City. SBi provided an unrestricted educational grant to help fund the workshop. Ankle distraction arthroplasty is indicated for patients with ankle osteoarthritis by preserving tibiotalar joint geometry to maintain joint mobility. Dr. Fragomen and Dr S. Robert Rozbruch*, Director of the HSS unit, developed SBi’s RingFIX™ RAD framing system for circular fixation of the ankle to achieve optimum distraction. “Ankle distraction is a key component of our joint preservation approach to ankle arthritis, offering an effective alternative to fusion by preserving the range of motion in the affected joint,” Dr. Fragomen said. “The approach is a relatively new treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis of the ankle and our results show marked improvement in the AOFAS scores and SF 36.” Jonathan M. Labovitz, DPM, Chairman of the Western Podiatric Medical Seminar, said: “Bringing state-of-the-art learning opportunities to our seminar attendees, such as the RAD technology to treat patients with osteoarthritis, reflects our commitment to being at the forefront of the next generation foot and ankle medicine and surgery.” Dr. Fragomen’s workshop, ‘Ankle Distraction Arthroplasty: An Alternative to Ankle Arthrodesis’, is open to all podiatric surgeons registered to attend the Congress and offers 3.5 hours of Continuing Education (CE) credits. The Western Podiatric Medical Congress is the largest podiatric program and exhibition west of the Mississippi and offers an extensive array of hands-on workshops and instructional courses, * These surgeons provide consulting services to SBi.
